Zig Zag Hat

This pattern creates a minimalistic but cute hat with a lovely stripe across the middle. The pattern is created in the round using 2x2 ribbing and basic stockinette stitch. The pattern is written to suit an average adult head but sizing can be adjusted by changing the amount of stitches cast on.

K2tog = Knit two stitches together

2x2 Ribbing Rim

Cast on 96 stitches in Colour A using your preferred cast-on method. Join in the round and mark the round with a stitch marker.

K2 P2 to create a 2x2 rib for 4" (if doing a folded rim, like pictured) or 2" (if doing a flat rim) from cast-on edge.

Main Body

Change to Colour B.

Work chart repeating the first 6 stitches until the end of the round is reached. Across the first few rows, reduce 6 stitches to create a total of 90 stitches by the time the colour work begins in order for the repeat to work. The chart is worked with knit stitches and is read from right to left.  Switch back to Colour A to work the grey squares.

Decrease

Continue with Colour B and work the decrease as follows, knitting all the even-numbered rows and switching to DPN's or magic loop when needed:

Row 1.
*K6, k2tog; repeat from * until end of the row [84]
Row 2.
Knit all even-numbered rows
Row 3.
*K5, k2tog; repeat from * [72]
Row 5.
*K4, k2tog; repeat from * [60]
Row 7.
*K3, k2tog; repeat from * [48]
Row 9.
*K2, k2tog; repeat from * [36]
Row 11.
*K1, k2tog; repeat from * [24]
Row 13.
K2tog for whole round [12]
Row 15.
K2tog for whole round [6]

Cut yarn and weave leftover yarn through the remaining live stitches. Pull tightly to close the hole.

Finishing

Create a pom pom using Colour A. Attach pom pom to the top of the hat and weave in all your ends.
