Abbreviations
K1 = Knit 1 stitch
P1 = Purl 1 stitch
K1tbl = Knit 1 stitch through the back loop
P1tbl = Purl 1 stitch through the back loop
P1tbl = Purl 1 stitch through the back loop
Method
The twisted rib is knit very similarly to a normal 1x1 rib where one stitch is knitted and the next is purled. The twist comes into play through the use of knitting and purling through the back loop of the stitch instead of the front loop that is usually used.
The method for twisted ribbing will vary depending upon whether you are casting on an odd or an even number of stitches.
Even Number
When casting on an even number of stitches the row pattern is as follows:
Row 1: K1tbl P1
Row 2: K1 P1tbl
Odd Number
When working with an odd number of stitches the row pattern changes only slightly:
Row 1: K1tbl P1
Row 2: P1tbl K1
Repeat these two rows until the length of twisted ribbing you require for your pattern has been achieved! To see how to knit and purl through the back loop watch the tutorial video below.
